In 1993, after trying carving with limited success on his own, Jon became inspired by a caricature carving book by Andy Anderson and the carvings of Myron Bowman from Winfield, KS. Myron became his mentor, and Jon went from being a dissatisfied salesman to an accomplished, happy, and motivated woodcarver. He's been doing carving shows, shows, and seminars full-time since 1994.

Jon has carvings in numerous collections in the U.S. and abroad. He's won many ribbons in competitions, including Best of Show, Carvers' Choice, and People's Choice. He was TWG state champion in 1999, and was awarded the Caricature Carvers of America award in 2003. His carvings have appeared in Chip Chats, Woodcarving Illustrated, Country Marketplace, and Log Home Design Ideas magazines. After doing shows and seminars all over the country and being in several galleries, Jon is now semi-retired as of 2019, and now sells only on his website, at home, and by phone or e-mail. The only show he does is the local Pikes Peak Whittlers' Show each May. He holds two seminars at his home in Colorado Springs each year.
