JON
NELSON WOODCARVER / TEACHER Jon Nelson has been carving since 1993. He became interested in carving when he found a caricature carving book by Andy Anderson in a box from an auction. He tried carving some pieces on his own, and became frustrated by the process. Then he met carver Myron Bowman at a woodcarving show. Myron became a mentor, giving him tips on tools, eyes, and noses, and Jon's been carving almost every day since. The carving bug bit him hard and Jon says he knows what he wants to be when he grows up! Jon's teaching career began in 1994. He now teaches across the U.S., including the Renegade Roundup in Lebanon, TN; the Silver Dollar City seminar in Branson, MO each March; the TWG seminar in Fredericksburg, TX each April; and the Creede Woodcarving Rendezvous in Creede, CO each July. Students appreciate his skill and his sense of humor. Jon's carvings are found in collections across the U.S. and in several foreign countries. They have appeared in Chip Chats, Woodcarving Illustrated, Country Marketplace, and Log Home Design Ideas magazines. He has won ribbons in numerous competitions, including Best of Show, Carvers' Choice, and People's Choice, and was Texas State Whittling' Champion in 1999. He received a Merit Award from the Caricature Carvers of America in 2003. His carvings include cowboys, Santas, gnomes, Indians, hillbillies, mountain men, walking sticks, and bark faces. Jon sells his carvings at fine arts and crafts shows, woodcarving shows, and in galleries in Colorado, Wyoming. He sells tools and over 30 roughouts of his designs, and he has a video on carving faces in cottonwood bark, and several study casts. Check out Jon's website for photos and more information.
